After 9 Months, Spirit Wind Returns in Razor-Like Form at Gulfstream

In five starts at ages two and three, Spirit Wind compiled a record of 3-2-0, which included a second in the Gr. II Princess Rooney Stakes and a victory in the Musical Romance. After the Princess Rooney in July, Jacks or Better Farm’s filly by Bahamian Squall took an enforced vacation of nine months, finally returning yesterday in an $87,000 allowance optional claimer at Gulfstream Park, just days after the passing of iconic owner Fred Brei, one of Florida’s leading breeders of the past two decades.

Spirit Wind was in top form for her comeback try, going wire-to-wire under Leonel Reyes and winning by a nostril over Bluefield. She paid $3.60 and was clocked in 1:09.18 for the six furlongs, just one second off the track record, while earning a check for $53,600. That raised her bankroll to $251,490, second highest behind Running Memories among Bahamian Squall’s money-winners.
