Handicappers Fail to Get the Message, Running Memories Wins Again in Near-Record Time

On May 8 at Gulfstream Park, Don Dizney’s Running Memories faced Miss Auramet in a $60,000 handicap at ‘about’ five furlongs on the grass. Running Memories, a 4-year-old filly by Bahamian Squall, went off at 9/2, while Miss Auramet was the prohibitive favorite at 3/5. The Double Diamond filly won the race by 1 3/4 lengths clocked in :55.97, just 36 hundredths off the course record and was rewarded with an Equibase ‘E’ speed figure of 103.

Yesterday, the pair locked horns again in another $60,000 handicap originally scheduled for five furlongs on the grass, but switched to ‘about’ five furlongs on the Tapeta track due to the recent heavy rains in South Florida. One would have thought that the sharp handicappers got the message in their previous meeting – but they didn’t. Miss Auramet was favored again, this time at 8/5, while Running Memories was sent off at a delicious 7/2.

With Kevin Krigger aboard, Running Memories sat back in fourth early, then exploded into the lead in the stretch and won by nearly four lengths over Miss Auramet. She was clocked in :56.01, just 11 hundredths off the track record, received another ‘E’ of 103, and paid $9.80, making those who wagered on her wonder what the other guys were thinking.

Running Memories earned a check for $37,000, raising her career total to $242,125 on a record of 7-2-1 in 14 starts. All this from a filly Mr. Dizney purchased for $20,000 at the OBS July sale in 2020.
