Hay Hay Paula Loves to Go From “Last to First”

Hay Hay Paula has become the poster mare for track announcers who like to inject the popular “from last to first” into their race calls.

The 5-year-old daughter of Bahamian Squall has raced 14 times at Gulfstream Park, and Sunday made it to the winner’s circle for the fourth time. In her first victory, she came from third place to win by four lengths, but in the next three, she was dead last going down the backstretch before making the “from last to first” list.

With Angel Morales aboard in her latest, the mare bred by Pamela Edel was seventh heading down the backstretch and when Morales let her loose on the turn, she inhaled the pack with a five-wide move and was in front as they straightened away in the stretch. She won by five lengths in 1:04.33 over the Tapeta surface, paid $5.20 and collected a check for $13,600, boosting her total to $85,180.
